Pedigree Analysis

Bob McCreery did not plan to breed a jumps sire. "I don't think I'd have intended to breed one from Sadler's Wells's first crop!" Old Vic, a foal of 1986, was the first of Sadler’s Wells Classic winners (French and Irish Derbies). He has since become well-known as a jump sire, most notable the sire of Gold Cup winner Kicking King.

"One of the things we all need to go by is guts," he says. "I wouldn't buy a horse who I didn't think had courage. I always thought Sadler's Wells was the perfect commercial stallion. "

"I don't think there's any way to know if a horse is going to be a good sire. Old Vic wasn't that beautiful, but he had four good clean limbs."

Sadler’s Wells’ himself sired the phenomenal jump horse Istabraq (Irish Champion Hurdle four times), along with Synchronised (Cheltenham Gold Cup) and Pridwell (Aintree Hurdle).

The name Sadler’s Wells has figured fairly prominently in the jump sires’ tables over the last decade – most recently with 2010 Welsh National winner Synchronised – and son Montjeu sired two winners at the 2010/11 Cheltenham Festival: Champion Hurdle winner Hurricane Fly and Noble Prince.

But the National Hunt stallion list is inundated with sons of Sadler’s Wells specifically advertised under the jumping banner. For the 2012/13 season, sons of Sadler’s Wells listed include: King’s Theatre (third), Oscar (fourth), Milan (fifth), Old Vic (seventh), and Montjeu (tenth – sire of Hurricane Fly, winner of four consecutive G1 events in the 2012/13 season).

Most successful stallion sons under National Hunt rules:

  • ACCORDION
  • DR MASSINI
  • KAYF TARA
  • KING’S THEATRE (best runner is multiple G1 winner Riverside Theatre)
  • OLD VIC (best runner is multiple G1 winner Kicking King)
  • OSCAR (best runner is multiple G1 winner Big Zeb)
  • POLIGLOTE
  • SADDLERS’ HALL
